561 – Halfling – the Rodney Dangerfield of D&D Languages

Halflings – they just don’t get no respect!

Recently, Geek & Sundry posted a article about how the characters in Harry Potter would break down into D&D statistics. Trying to figure out what class and, in some cases, races our favorite characters from other media would be in Dungeons & Dragons is a long time source of friendly arguments and/or heated debate. Reading over this article, I don’t have very many problems with it, except for one thing: they forgot one particular spell from all of the characters’ spell lists, one which is pretty common in the Harry Potter universe: Wingardium Leviosa. Mage Hand, anyone?

Hmmm.

I am almost ashamed to admit that very few of my non-Halfling characters speak Halflingua.

I’m pretty sure that most of the exceptions were because of other players warning me they were playing Halflings…

I seem to recall that the tradition back in the 70s and 80s was that Halflings only spoke Common. Mainly because Tolkien himself had stipulated that the Hobbits had adopted to Common so thoroughly as to let their previous language die out almost completely. @_@

Huh, I didn’t know halfling’s were welsh. It seems like this task is going to need all of them to pitch in.

@RedAdmiral: I was wondering if anyone was going to pick up on that. 🙂

One hour to cook a super specialty magic food? Guessing at least some of the ingredients would require quests to track down unless that is truly a well stocked kitchen.
